What is Nonwoven Fabric?

Non-wovens or nonwoven fabric are fabrics that are produced by mechanical, thermal or chemical processes, but without being woven and without the need to convert fibers into yarn, since the fiber webs are bonded together as a result of the inherent friction (entanglement) from one fiber to another thanks to these non-conventional processes.

To form the nonwoven fabric, textile fibers are randomly dumped into a tray without any one direction needing to predominate and are bonded to each other by mechanical, chemical or heat means in the form of webs, mats or sheets. Nonwoven fabrics are made mainly from polymers, are inexpensive, have high strength and are commonly used for plastics. They can consist of one or several layers, such as SMS fabrics, which are trilaminated.

These fabrics can be made from fibers (the most commonly used are polyester and viscose rayon) and both artificial and natural filaments.

Types of Nonwoven Fabrics

The two main types of nonwoven fabric are NWF in polypropylene (PP) and NWF in Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond (SMS), depending on the process used to create them.

NWF in polypropylene.

Polypropylene is a fabric made of soft textured plastic fibers which are fused together using ultrasound and steam. There are different thicknesses of this material and due to its hygienic characteristics it is ideal in the health sector due to the high safety it provides to doctors, patients and the user in general, in addition to the cost-effectiveness it offers.

NWF in Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond (SMS).
This type of fabric consists of 3 layers and is also made from 100% polypropylene. Of these 3 layers, the two outer layers are Spunbond and the middle layer is Meltblown.

* Spunbond. To form a spunbond or Spunbond nonwoven fabric, polypropylene is stretched into a continuous filament, which is then placed in a web along a conveyor belt. With the addition of chemical, thermal or mechanical bonding processes, the fibers form a strong, durable fabric, which is often used in applications such as carpet backing or filters.

* Meltblown. Like a spunbond nonwoven, a meltblown nonwoven also uses polypropylene, but it is fed through a linear matrix to form long, thin fibers. These fibers are cooled by bursts of hot air, which are then forced through a collector mesh to form a fabric that creates a fine filter and is self-adhesive. Meltblown nonwovens are widely used in the production of medical masks, diapers and feminine hygiene products.

By making this 3-layer "sandwich", you get an improved fabric as you combine and add the properties of both types of fabrics while reducing the disadvantages of each.

Application of Nonwoven Fabric

Dry-laid web formation: Dry-laid web formation is one of the old techniques and is very similar to the felting process. For the production of dry-laid web, carding machines and web lappers are used to layer the fibrous batt. The fibrous web layers are subsequently felted using heat, moisture, and agitation. These materials may be of natural or synthetic polymer composition and can be processed alone or in blends. Carded webs are produced from either short-staple fiber (20–60 mm) or long-staple fiber (50–150 mm).

The dry-laid web formation technique, such as fiber preparation, blending, carding, and garnering are innovations of the textile industry. These processes prepare staple fibers, blend them, and layer the fiber batt in a dry state. In dry-laid web formation, the fibers are collected into a web form by parallel lapping, cross-lapping, or aerodynamic (air-laid) lap forming and then bonded by means of mechanical needles, hydro-entanglement, chemical adhesives, and thermal bonding methods.

Raw material: Cotton fiber, synthetic Fiber, Viscose fiber, Short cotton fiber.

● Application of dry-laid
● Diapers
● Baby wipes
● Feminine Napkins
● Tampons
● Adult Incontinence Products
● Medical textile

Wet-laid web formation: Wet-laid forming, which can be regarded as being analogous to conventional papermaking processes but with use of chopped synthetic or staple fibers, continues to draw attention as an advantageous way to prepare advanced nonwoven textile products. The wet-laid web forming system is designed to fabricate short fibers dispersed in liquid, which are subsequently layered. The wet-laid method is specifically suitable for the large scale production of disposable products, such as tea bags, aprons, gloves, napkins, and surgical gauze.

Raw Material: A wide range of natural, wood pulp, mineral, synthetic and man-made fibers of varying lengths can be used such as glass, polyester, polyamide, and regenerated fiber.

Applications: Filter paper, Tea Bag Fabric, Napkin, Surgical gauze.

Spun-melt non-woven fabric: Spun-melt is a generic term describing the manufacturing of nonwoven webs directly from thermoplastic polymers. It encompasses 2 processes,
● Spun-bond Non-woven
● Melt-Blown Non-woven

Spun-laid (bonded) Non-woven: Polymer granules are extruded into filaments through so called spinnerets. The continuous filaments are stretched and quenched before being deposited on conveyor belt to form a uniform web. The spun-laid process results into nonwovens with an increased strength compared to carding, due to the attenuation of the filaments. The downside is that the choice of raw materials is more restricted. Co-extrusion of two components leads to bico fibers, either adding more properties to the web or allowing air-through bonding. Please note that the word spunbond is reserved for thermo bonded spun-laid.

Simply put, nonwovens have opened doors of opportunity for everyday convenience that would have been the stuff of dreams or wild imagination not too long ago. Just like Henry Ford made it possible for everyday folks to own a car and the Wright brothers to glide from one part of the country to another over 1000 miles away in a matter of hours, nonwovens have revolutionized several industries, now being in hundreds of products which would otherwise be too expensive or not feasible to manufacture at a profit.

One of the outstanding qualities of nonwovens is that they can be extremely durable, if that's what's needed, or single-use, limited-life fabrics. Beyond this, nonwovens possess limitlessly versatile qualities like super absorbency, resilience, liquid repellency, stretchability, strength, softness, flame retardancy, cushning, washability, bacterial barriers, filtering and sterility.

Able to combine these qualities in innumerable ways, nonwoven manufacturers create products with the unique, specific characteristics requested or needed by a client, usually at a very reasonable price. In spite of all these advantages, many people may not know about nonwovens and, if they do, they probably don't know what a big, indispensable part of their lives nonwovens are.

Nonwoven products that stand out the most
Bed linen
These disposable products are practical and affordable because of their tendencies to stay soft to the touch, not damage table surfaces, be 100% biodegradable & environmentally-friendly, come in beautiful designs, be appropriately hygienic, and reasonably priced.

Carpet/carpet backings
Nonwoven fabric is ideally suited for carpet construction enhancement by being able to extend the life of a carpet, by protecting the integrity of said product, and by reducing the chances for mold development or bacterial buildup, with proper use and deployment. These also make installation easier, help protect wooden surfaces and can also help make repairs more feasible.

Diapers
Unfortunately, disposable diapers have only been around for a short time, comparatively speaking. Before their advent, there wasn't really an alternative to cloth diapers. Cloth diapers didn't absorb much, were unnecessarily smelly and had to be laundered.

Although the earliest forms of disposable diapers weren't so great, the new designs have literally changed for the better the whole "how to keep babies fresh, comfortable, dry and clean for as long as possible" paradigm. New disposable diapers come with color changing indicators that indicate if the child is wet, special sizing features, and re-attachable TM-type Velcro closures.

Floor Duster Cloths
A dry floor cloth can provide superlative performance and convenience. The nonwoven sheets used are made in required thicknesses that allow it to conform to just about any surface in order to more efficiently trap dirt, dust and hair.

Heat/Electricity Conductive Fabric
Nonwovens may help alleviate the energy crisis by helping to deliver cost-effective solutions related to heating. Electrically conductive fabrics, with special under-padding integration, can help heat a surface, whether constructed of ceramic tiles, wood, ceiling tiles or wall coverings. In these scenarios heated fabrics could take the place of other heating systems by producing heat through radiation.

Home Furnishing Fabrics
Interestingly, new developments in nonwoven fabrics will create home furnishing products that are good at repelling dirt, getting rid of dust mites, and providing antimicrobial characteristics.

Laundry Dryer Sheets
Most people have used dryer sheets at least once in their lifetime. These durable fabrics, usually anti-static and of very thin construction, can put up with very high temperatures in the dryer. They can also be made so that they gradually and over time release special softeners and scents while the clothes are being dried.

Medical products & supplies
The most dramatic use of nonwovens in the medical theatre of operations are the only-once-used surgical gowns worn by surgeons and their staff during often-complicated, possibly lasting for hours operations. The advantage of these products is their well-documented ability to protest healthcare personnel from patients' bodily fluids and blood; they are also dependably sterile.

Many people in healthcare facilities end up acquiring Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs), or nosocomial infections, every year; these sometimes culminate in death. One way to end up acquiring one of these is through incisions—sometimes referred to as Surgical Site Infections or SSIs. There is no question that nonwoven gowns and drapes greatly reduce chances of acquiring the many types of infections initiated (or made worse) during a hospital stay. They also help reduce spread of disease in general.

The Difference Between Nonwoven Fabric and Plastic Materials

Ⅰ. Brief introduction of cotton spunlace non-woven fabric
Cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric is a kind of nonwoven fabric, which is a nonwoven fabric formed by directly using 100% natural cotton fibers through wet process, airflow or mechanical netting, then spunlace reinforcement, and finally finishing. The advantages of a new type of fiber product with soft, air-permeable and flat structure is that it does not produce fiber debris, and it is strong, durable, and silky soft. It is also a kind of reinforcing material, and it is environmentally friendly and can be naturally degraded.

Ⅱ. Several advantages of cotton spunlace non-woven fabrics
1. The cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric has a good fluffy feeling and good softness.

2. Antibacterial. After antibacterial and water-repellent finishing, the cotton spunlace nonwoven products are water-repellent, not moldy, and can isolate the erosion of bacteria and insects in the liquid, and are not moldy.

3. The strength of the finished product is non-directional, and the strength is similar in the vertical and horizontal directions.

4. It is a green non-hazardous product, does not contain other chemical ingredients, has stable performance, is non-toxic, has no peculiar smell, does not irritate the skin, and can be naturally degraded.

5. Composed of 100% natural cotton fiber, it is porous and has good air permeability. It is easy to keep the cloth dry and easy to wash.

Ⅲ. The difference between cotton spunlace non-woven fabric and plastic material
The raw material of the cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric is cotton, and the raw material of the plastic bag is polyethylene. The cotton spunlace nonwoven shopping bag can be reused more than 10 times, and it can be completely degraded naturally after being discarded, and it does not pollute the environment.

Disadvantages of plastic bags:
1. Compared with cotton spunlace nonwoven fabrics, the strength and durability are poor;
2. It cannot be cleaned like other fabrics.
3. The fibers are arranged in a certain direction, so it is easy to split from the right angle direction and so on. Therefore, the improvement of the production method mainly focuses on the improvement of preventing splitting.
4. It cannot be degraded or is difficult to degrade, causing great pollution to the environment.
